GPS Tracking Costs and Service Fees
“What exactly am I paying for?” This is a common question people ask who are in the market for a GPS tracking device. If you are thinking about purchasing a tracker we’re here to help you understand what you can expect to pay.
It is important to find a device and service that fits your budget, and more importantly your tracking needs. We understand that the purchase of your first GPS tracker can be a daunting task. There are a variety of functions offered by each device and trying to figure out which is best for your needs can be overwhelming. We want to make this process as easy as possible for you to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck!
With that being said, let’s consider the various costs that you could be expected to pay when purchasing a GPS tracker:
- Cost of Device: The first cost you should consider is the amount you will pay for the device hardware. GPS devices typically range from $50-$150 in price, aside from the subscription/contract/service fee. Devices that cost in the low end of that range can still give you reliable tracking with great features. You will need to review exactly what you need from a GPS tracking device for your use case. Not sure what features you need? You generally will pay more for battery life, coverage, and report frequency.
- Monthly Service Fee: Most trackers will also require a monthly subscription fee or contract. This fee usually includes GPS tracking and special features unique to each tracker and plan. The fee should also include storage of your tracking history (confirm with the company how long they keep your data).
Look for a GPS tracking company that gives you the option to cancel your subscription at any time. Avoid companies that try to lock you into yearly contracts that you may be left paying after you no longer have/need the device.
For example, many tracking companies offer a mobile app that customers use to get location updates of their device. The app will likely have a map with markers on it to notate where the tracker reported over time. Monthly service fees are often automatically deducted from a credit card (confirm terms with the company before purchase). Monthly subscription charges typically range anywhere from $5 to $15 a month. The more expensive monthly service charges typically offer other features in addition to the GPS tracking such as audio monitoring capabilities.
It is important to understand what you are paying for, whether you’re tracking luggage, a loved one, a car or an asset it is worth the investment to always know where your valuables are at all times.
