GPS an incredibly valuable tool that has become increasingly useful and highly valued over the years. Global Positioning System uses a series of about 30 satellites that continuously orbit Earth and transmit data of location/position and time to local receivers. It is a satellite-based radio navigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Air Force.
At any moment 3-10 satellites are overlapping signals to pinpoint your location by a process called tri-lateration. Absolute accuracy for these devices is about 5 meters, while typical accuracy is about 10 meters. Not as precise as the GPS technology implemented in our vehicles and phones for direction.
It was originally developed for use by the US government or military but now is openly available to the public and integrated in many technologies such as the handheld GPS unit, mobile phones,GPS tracking devices, etc.
This technology in recent years has become much more common. We use it to monitor our children and elderly loved ones, as well as tracking personal and valuable assets. GPS technology can even be used for commercial purposes such as vehicle tracking, reducing expenditure/operating costs, timekeeping, optimizing routes using geofences, and increasing efficiency and work processes. Some things to note about GPS technology in regards to its limitations would be that GPS signal may be blocked by metal, skyscrapers, bridges as well as indoor facilities such as hotels, homes, parking garages or underground. The obstruction of GPS signal can make it difficult for your device to receive its positioning from GPS satellite signal.
